Trenabie Mill - 4 Star Self Catering Accommodation in Westray

Trenabie New Mill is a Grade II listed building; part of a recently completed restoration project to a group of listed Mill buildings, some of which date back to the 17th century, it last worked as a corn mill in the early 1960’s. Trenabie Mill has been restored to a high standard, receiving a Civic Trust award in 2003.

Trenabie Mill is a building of individual character; the old kiln has been converted into a four level conservatory where flowers, fruit, and foliage are grown - some hydroponically. In the Spring, Summer and Autumn, perfumed warm air is taken by a thermostatically controlled fan through a duct in the attic to the hall/dining room on the ground floor. The perfume depends on the flowers in season.

Autumn, Winter and Spring visitors can see and hear the water rushing past the water wheel through the wheel house on its way to the sea.

The large garden is terraced, with a small croquet lawn, three ponds, mill burn, mill lade and ornamental canal. There are eels and brown trout in the mill pond. The trout can often be seen jumping for flies on a summers evening. Otters regularly come within a few feet of the mill buildings and occasionally can be seen. They are often heard in the winter.

Important:The water at the mill is a concern for the very young or children who cannot swim. The cottage has been set out for families, but because of the water, the steep mill stairs, and the wheel house, we are reluctant to let the mill to families with any young children.
